Agricultural Sciences for Our Future

The Faculty of Agriculture at the Yamaguchi University is located on the Yoshida Campus, close from the Yuda hot-spring resorts in the east part of the Yamaguchi basin, just next to the Mt. Himeyama with an elegant ridgeline. The experimental farm is also located on the same campus, imparting a peaceful and greenery environment. Surrounded by such a nice atmosphere, the students can acquire specialized knowledge and techniques by learning either in the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences addressing food production and environmental protection, or in the Department of Biological Chemistry addressing life science of microorganisms, plants and animals. In addition, the faculty is full of activities including forward-looking-and-advanced researches such as the development of thermotolerant microbial functions and new technologies for crop production in a plant factory, local industry-government-academia cooperation, and global academic exchange with foreign universities, especially with those in southeastern Asia. Through the experience and practice of these activities, the students can broaden and deepen their views on the potential of Agricultural Sciences and both regional and international issues. The graduates get a wide variety of jobs and more than half of them are agricultural sciences-related fields, such as industries and governments involved in agriculture, forestry, fishery, foods and pharmaceuticals. Nearly half of the graduates continue to graduate school for acquiring more advanced knowledge and techniques. In April 2016, the Graduate School of Sciences and Technology for Innovation established by integrative reorganization of

the Graduate School of Science and Engineering (offering both the master’s and doctor’s degree programs), the Graduate School of Agriculture, and a part of the Graduate School of Medicine, encouraging development of researchers and highly professional engineers who can contribute to the progress of society in charge of creating and promoting innovation with use of knowledge on the management of technology. In addition, it is also possible to go on to doctor’s degree programs of the United Graduate School of Agricultural Sciences at the Tottori University.

Agricultural Sciences is a multidisciplinary applied science with a mission to confront critical problems related to food, life and environment over past, present and future. In order to fulfill the mission and realize an affluent society, the entire faculty continues to work hard for advancement of Agricultural Sciences and development of talented personnel.

Philosophy and Goals

The faculty aims to provide advanced education for the preservation of the ecological environment, the development of bioresources, and the efficient production of safe foods that support the existence of humanity, to contribute to the growth of community and society through cutting-edge research, and to cultivate human resources that can be active in the international arena.

Characteristics of educational contents

Agriculture is an academic discipline which aims to realize a rich life for humanity by effectively utilizing biological resources such as micro-organisms, plants and animals and by co-existing with them.
The Faculty of Agriculture at Yamaguchi University cultivates human resources who tackle various problems that threaten the continuance of the earth and society, including food shortage, concern for food safety, global warming, environmental destruction, and disappearance of diversity of living species. It makes wide and full use of various sciences such as physics and chemistry with a focus on biology.
